Happy Valentine’s Day - Have An Affair To Remember!
This movie is one of my all time favorite classic love stories… from 1957, An Affair to Remember is full of love, humor, and yes, sadness to feel for these two.
Before you go any further - the rest of this post contains some spoilers, though it wouldn’t prevent me from reading them had I not seen the film at this point. I hope they encourage you to actually go out and get it, actually!
Watching the part where Cary Grant is at the top of the Empire State Building, looking so very sad and disappointed, and going to the scene where Deborah Kerr is in the hospital after the accident having a complete FIT over not being able to leave… then back to Cary, it’s thundering and lightning and pouring down rain… church bells are heard in the background (she’d told the cabbie she was going off to be married, right before she was struck by the car). Yes, this was the inspiration for the scenes in Sleepless in Seattle with Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan, another great love story.
Sure, the whole thing is pretty unrealistic, however that’s the best part of a love story. It gives our hearts something to yearn for… it makes us strive to experience “that kind of love”. I remember at the end of The Notebook, saying EXACTLY those words to my boyfriend. Sure, he chalked it up to my being an overly romantic and sentimental woman, but he couldn’t blame me for feeling that way.
Here’s the ending of An Affair To Remember. Cary Grant and Deborah Kerr… what an amazing duo!
Happy
Valentine’s
Day,
Everyone!
