Bobby Darin - Mack The Knife Video - 1959
I love this song - I can’t even tell you why, other than that his voice is cool and I can envision the band. One of the things that makes me love Bobby Darin so much is that he was a performer in every sense of the word. He had a pretty tragic life, and yet when he got on stage, he just wowed people.
I also happen to love Kevin Spacey’s version (and Michael Buble’s of course) - but this is the original Bobby Darin, as part of the “Three Penny Opera” on TV in 1959. He had such a stage presence - they wanted to make him a rock star, and he just wanted to do his own thing. One commenter on the video said, “Bobby Darin was so cool that just by standing next to him you’d get frostbite.” I happen to agree. He came through full force, despite the tragedy in his life. Amazing…

I was at the bank the other day and they had a trivia screen in the waiting line… one of the questions was, “What was the #1 song in 1959?”.
That was it! Great song.
